Bit of tooting from cars and one, I thought, aggressive cab and fare on NW corner of Lincoln's Inn Fields. Otherwise a good natured outing. The police were excellent.

No chanting like there was on Friday but a spontaneous roar after the minutes silence that was quite spectacular.

At least twice as many cyclists at this event. Quite a turnout considering the short notice. I thought I was the only bent in the village when I heard "snap" and my bike seemed to have cloned itself. Not only another speedmachine of the same colour, but the rider had cloned my age and accent as well. Strange.
did a strange bearded man ask if you were mikey ?

was a good ride , if thats the right phrase to use in the circumstances. one cabbie was having a rant and i politely explained that he needed to think how much traffic there would be if all 1600 ( and i realise that is a woefully low number) here used a car. I think he got a message.

I don't wznt dutch style facilities I just want a road network that is shared respectfully by all road users.

I agree on the facilities (at least partly). I'm not against Dutch style facilities, but space is at a premium and when you start partitioning off space for specialised use you devalue that space. We need to find a way to share the space safely & without conflict.

I'm torn on this.

I think more should be done, but I don't like that LCC are pushing exclusively for segregation. I don't like the article saying "This morning another Londoner died under the wheels of a lorry in a street that provides no dedicated space for cycling." suggesting that it wouldn't have happened if there was a cycle lane.

But there isn't room for a 'dedicated space for cycling' on every single one of London's road, and then we have issues of crap 'dedicated spaces', being expected to exclusively use our 'dedicated spaces' and not being able to do things like turning right.

Apparently LCC had the 'vehicular cycling' vs segregation debate and segregation won, vehicular cycling being told to f-off - no middle ground.

If this is truly the case, I'm not sure I want to support them.

I've had it with the LCC. I told Tom Bogdanovich in 2006 that the big 'win' would be construction traffic, and the way to sort it was through the JCT contract. He said it was 'too complicated'. The LCCs lorries campaign was focussed on local authority vehicles where there wasn't a problem but where there was the opportunity of funding and cheap group hugs. And some 40 construction traffic fatalities later...................they're using death to promote the same crap that saw two hundred million quid flushed down the toilet on LCN+. That's exploitative, ignorant and.just plain crass.

the big contractors are cottoning on to this, mainly through the site managers like me who cycle to work. It is not going to be an easy or overnight process but we are making more demands of our hauliers both at construction and demolition stages. All drivers on one project are required to provide proof of eyesight check within the last 12 months and contractors are under no illusion what will happen if they cock up. chipping away slowly gets you what you want , hitting a walnut with a sledgehammer just makes a mess to clean up.

I wish we had started the process 10 years ago, but there were not the volumes of cyclists voicing that opinion.

Here for rides.
Going Dutch is not going to work in London. What will work in London is less priority given to cars, more naked roads and critical mass. Now that there are more cyclists then motorised transport at peak commute time at key points on my CS7 commute it’s time to reprioritise who the roads are for.
This is the most sensible thing I've read about cycling in London in the last five years.
