It lives! I got the low end pre amp from Ritcher's and a very cheap cable adapter. Once I found enough mains sockets, I realised I didn't have a cable to go from pre amp to the Sony.

I then remembered that I got a cable to run my iPod through the stereo system listed above somewhere. Unfortunately, one of the speakers has a buzzy vibration in it so I never did use it. Once I plugged that in, there was a hum and behold! Elvis Costello in the room.

The deck appears warped but I think it might supposed to like that? There seems a definite warp exactly at 120 degree intervals.

Thanks everyone! Daughter is very happy.

A phono to 3.5mm lead is what you'll require
That will certainly join them together, and you’ll get audio out. But it’ll sound crud, and be too quiet.

You need a RIAA pre-amp stage - it’s not just gain, it does something fairly drastic to the EQ. To cut down the hiss on vinyl, they apply RIAA equalisation before cutting the disk. That boosts the treble by up to 20dB, and cuts the bass by a similar amount. On playback, your amplifier input stage applies an opposite equalisation - cutting the treble and boosting the bass - to make the overall processing flat.

If you don’t apply RIAA EQ (i.e. don’t use a proper phono input) then when you turn up the volume, your ears will bleed.....

Is the mat 'flat' on the platter, those old rubber mats can become distorted/degraded over time.
