Thanks very much - I'm so glad I asked the question now, lots for me to digest. Time is working against us this year, so it's going to be tough to squeeze it in between work and family holidays etc.

I'm far from a serious cyclist, so appreciate all the tips I get here. I'll certainly use some of the advice when we finally nail a route.

Agree with Brandane about the C class road from Stranraer but when you reach the A714 turn left for Pinwherry, turn right there through Assell Glen B734 to Old Dailly, turn right and head for Crosshill and on to route 7 there (if you are staying in B&Bs there is a good cyclist friendly one 100 yards off route 7 as you enter Ayr Sunnyside, 26 Dunure Road Ayr. If you are going to Oban then it gives you the option to cross onto Mull and off via the Fishnish ferry. Then A884 -> B8043 -> A861 to Corran and beyond.

Just a thought ! Have you looked at the ferry service from Ballycastle to Campbelltown and doing the new Caledonian Cycle route up to Inverness.
