I have just seen the most horrible thing ever.
Whilst out on my bike, a car passed me and as he drove off I saw a rabbit run out of the hedge and into the road. This absolute T**T of a driver actually swerved to make sure he ran it over.
As I rode passed it (the car had gone) I saw the most awful sight. Its back half was squashed and its insides were outside on the road, but it was still alive and trying to drag itself back to the hedge by its front paws.
Luckily for me this happened right outside a farm and I ran into the yard, started trying to tell the farmer what had happened and burst into tears.He got a shovel and came with me, then told me to go and he would deal with it.I cycled round the corner and threw up.

I doubt any of you would be heartless to make any nasty comments about this but if your going to then please dont, I am upset enough. I am no townie..im a country girl through and through but that was just horrendous.

Are you sure this driver actually tried to hit the rabbit? I mean rabbits are usually very quick and don't just sit around in the open unless something is wrong with them like myxomatosis.

Not cool! I have run over a couple of rabbits in my time and feel so awful afterwards, but to do it intentionally is just plain wrong. Good of the farmer to sort things out though.
EDIT- This actually reminds me of the time i saw my cat run over, it was a twin, the other was there as well, this lad was speeding through our village and the poor cat had no chance, it was in a bad way like the rabbit, i couldn't take seeing him like that so ran away 9i was in primary school), his brother was defiantly scared for life, he is now very shakey and nervous.

Im not sure he tried to hit it but it looked as though he did. And the rabbit definitely didnt have myxi, although loads of them round here do

Ah, was gonna say, when I am at the yorkshire wildlife trust, the'll shoot any myxi rabbit which is fair enough they should be put out of there misery, at home I've got a pet rabbit which has free roam of the garden, he even comes in the house, it'd not be nice if he got ran over , can't think why someone would want to inflict torture upon an innocent animal :

Not nice for you to see that, hopefully the farmer put it out of its misery fairly quick, thats life im afraid !!

Awful, I feel sorry for you Lisa , it's a horrible thing to see.

Unfortunately there are people who try to run rabbits & other wildlife over among other things (that I'll not mention). You've got to wonder, if that's how that treat animals how do they treat other people?

That's a dreadful thing to have to see. I'm really sorry for you.

Is there any possibility that the driver was swerving to miss the rabbit? I wasn't there, so I don't know, but it's a natural reaction to swerve to avoid an animal... maybe the driver's reactions where slow and they swerved into it?? I know it wouldn't change the sickening image you had to deal with but it might help you feel a little more kindly to the human race if there was a possibility of doubt over intention.

Yello, I dont know. It all happened so quickly-when it ran out I was cringing, thinking "dont hit it" but then the car swerved and carried on, leaving it in the road. Iv calmed down now(and stopped shaking) and im not sure what happened tbh..maybe the driver did try to avoid it.
I feel a bit silly now, posting all that, but it was just so awful. Im just grateful for that farmer or id have had to have done something myself-theres no way I could have just left it.

That's a wicked and cruel thing to do!

If it makes the pathetic creature driving feel better/superior, then God only knows what other things it'll do!

I saw a Spanish neighbour of my mate's in Spain deliberately drive over a kitten, killing almost immediately!

He parked, got out and laughed with his mates. I went up and remonstrated with him angrily, but he just shrugged his shoulders as if to say 'It's only a cat!'

Karma WILL catch up with them!

He could have tired to "aim off" and misjudged it but OTOH it might have been a joke with his passenger. Trouble for a rabbit is that it sees the car as a predator and jinks around trying to dodge a strike where a fast bolt into the gutter would be a better thing.

I used to have a driving job that entailed travelling round the Northumberland countryside through the night. I ran rabbits over every night without fail, no way was I going to swerve to avoid them and risk a more serious accident.

I did a stint with a woman in traffic and we saw a bloke swerve and hit a pheasant - right in front of us. My colleague gave him a right bollocking about the pheasant, then ran some checks on the car, realised it wasn't insured, so booked him for no insurance and had his car towed away. He asked for a lift to the bus station, so we told him it was about a mile walk, and we were not going that way, so drove off.

Then it started raining.

The amount of times I've nearly been off'd by a rabbit. I even wrote a car off once trying to avoid a pheasant.
Now I just go straight, ease off, and do my best not to watch them. IMHO, swerving misfires as often as not, and can make you very unpredictable for whatever is coming the other way / behind.
I've reached this position through my own experiences, and find almost everything now darts alongside before shooting back into the verge.

Instinct (and consideration towards other living things) will try to make me swerve, but I know this only unbalances the bike / car, and makes me harder to avoid for the animal.

Swerving towards it is lunacy, as is not going back to put it out of its misery. It would (did) haunt me for years if I'd hit anything.
