Bad manners

Is it me, or are some folk just downright rude?

Poodling around the quiet Fen lanes, some cyclists WILL insist on riding up silently behind me and then overtaking at speed, disappearing into the distance without a word.

Personally I think this is rude. A simple 'Hi there' or 'Hello' would be nice. They may be riding expensive bikes and be uber fit, but a little common curtesy and friendliness would brighten my day.

I come across a few who do that and two localish riders not only creep up silently but then bawl in my right ear as they pass. It's supposedly a cheery greeting but at that range it's dangerous and very annoying. I now 'have strong words' with them when they do it!

Given your description, I concur. I don't care for people creeping up silently behind me and I don't like being bawled at either.

You need to hang a sign on your back, telling other cyclists to make noise but not too much noise, as they approach. Maybe specify a figure, in decibels?

Yes, it's the fact that if they waited 1 second they'd be visible and don't, but shout from close range that boils my piss. All they need to do is to speak 3 or 4 seconds earlier or 1 second later. I'm sure these two do it for shock effect.

Makes no difference to me, I still get a shock as I'm losing my hearing as I get older so can't hear them anyway!

I don't say hello or hi as I pass. I think they might think I'm being a bit smug having both the speed to pass and breath to say hi.
I normally just lift the fingers of my left hand off the bar in a casual wave.

I'm too busy huffing and puffing to worry about the smugness of the rider passing me and whether they say hello or not. Anyhoo, there's so many of 'em that it would be pointless anyway
Although, I proudly managed to overtake a woman with her two kids recently
and I actually managed to overtake a normal cyclist too - well chuffed. So they only had one leg and were probably 98 years old. Who cares

Mrs Colly is exactly like that.

Walking to the polling station last time we had to do out 'democratic duty', a woman walks out from a side road and happens to be walking next to us. Her and my Mrs chat away merrily all the way the the polling station. Probably 5 mins walk, if that, in that time I am sure they passed enough information about family, finances, illnesses etc that either one could have done a passable identity theft.

On the way back home I asked did she know her from work.....................''Er, no, I've never seen her before''

As a kid, I gave up asking my Mum who she'd just stopped and spent ages speaking to when we were out shopping. The answer was always "I've no idea what her name is, but I've been speaking to her for years now!"

On the way home, when it's busier, I usually nod & smile or slightly raise a hand from the bar in acknowledgement.
