Just as well you aren't a driver as you'd have lost your license long ago. That is a bottle of wine a night - 7 days a week  Heed the advice if you can. That much alcohol in the system messes with the personality too much irrespective of what it is doing to your liver.

Bum. I have to cut down on alcohol..

was that GP or specialist?

My lipid clinic doc (familial high cholesterol) told me to go home and have a couple of glasses of red wine every day, but no beer.
I followed half his advice!

GP. It all made perfect sense to me. I rarely have much time for doctors, but this one has made a very positive impression - you feel like you're being treated like an adult.

Earlier this year I was told to give up cycling by a consultant - for reasons entirely seperate from the risk of a heart attack. Well, as Lincoln, my friendly bike merchant, said 'medicine is a small village'. So I simply ignored the advice. This is different. I've been given a line of reasoning, and while there are parts of my life I wouldn't change in the hope of extending it, having a drink in the evening isn't proximal to the core of my being. It's recreation, as coke was until a few years back.

If you're a beer man, then I suggest Holsten Pils alc free, Becks alc free and Cobra alc free. All available from major supermarkets.

If, as I suspect, you're not a beer man, then moderation will be difficult. (at first)

I'm 37 and am only just learning how great it is to spread 35 units over a week rather than a weekend.

Good luck!

Ho, hum. I'll just have to invent a target to justify all this virtuous living.

Paris-Brest-Paris 2011 in under 50 hours. With that weirdo saddlebag thing on the bag of your Colnago. And no knee bandages!

If you do it, you get to have one glass of Calvados at the end, then slap the consultant who advised you to give up cycling with a sweaty pair of bibshorts...

As the old saying goes- the definition of an alcoholic is someone who drinks more than his doctor.

Erm...35 units isn't 7 bottles. It's 3.5, assuming your wine is around 12.5%, and a lot are stronger. I just checked the 75 cl bottle of Shiraz I was drinking earlier, and that was 9.8 units.

I'd drive the morning after drinking half a bottle with no worries whatsoever.

Yup, 1 bottle of rouge @ 13% is around 11 units. Finish it (with a partner) early and you're OK the next morning.

Finish it yourself or drink after 12 then avoid driving next morning.

Yerch, yerch and also yerch! Who says 35 a week is a lot? Is there any real basis for this advice, other than a doctor's general bleating? I'd ignore it if I were you. What do they know? They just make it up as they go along. Cheers!

Yes, that's what I'd do. Steinbeck was very sensible on this subject, too.

Cheers too my good man. My resting pulse goes over 60 if I drink too much.

If your body can take over 35 units, then I say go for it. Unfortunately, mine cannot.
