If you're a beer man, then I suggest Holsten Pils alc free, Becks alc free and Cobra alc free. All available from major supermarkets.

If, as I suspect, you're not a beer man, then moderation will be difficult. (at first)

I'm 37 and am only just learning how great it is to spread 35 units over a week rather than a weekend.

Good luck!

Alcohol-free booze makes about just as much sense as orgasm-free sex. You, sir, are not a well man.

Dellzeqq, what reason did the doc give to you?

I had a liver function test done about 18 months ago. The doctor when looking at the results said "Ah, I see you're a drinker". He was quite correct, at that point I could probably count on the thumb of one hand how many alcohol free days I'd had in the previous 20 years (that's not to say I was always p1ssed either). He said he could tell because the fat count on my liver was higher than it should have been and was screwing up the good colesterol number he was more bothered with. I got the usual talking to about keeping under the 20odd units a week. He also said that it's probably genetics, approximately 25% of the population are more surceptable to a fatty liver from alcohol than the rest.

After I left, I decided that it was time to do something about it, so I now only drink at weekends, and not nearly so much as I did before. To be fair I still probably consume about 30odd units a week. I also take Milk Thistle which helps the liver create more bile and essentially force toxins out quicker.

A few months ago I went for a check up (next one due any time now). This time I saw a different doc who said that the colesterol was still bad, the fat count on my liver had improved, but was still high for my age. She then said for me not to worry about that one, as they had things they could give me to control it if they felt they needed to and to concentrate more on getting the colesterol figure down (I'm now hoping that losing 2 stone, riding a bike and eating more fish are going to achieve this).

Erm...35 units isn't 7 bottles. It's 3.5, assuming your wine is around 12.5%, and a lot are stronger. I just checked the 75 cl bottle of Shiraz I was drinking earlier, and that was 9.8 units.

I'd drive the morning after drinking half a bottle with no worries whatsoever.

There was me painting a picture of a total piss head. I don't drink a huge amount of wine, but I do enjoy a nice Cabernet.

I just hope you wear a helmet while you're drinking it.

Seriously tho', doctors will always tell you to drink less - and of course physiologically speaking, they're right. Other things being equal, less alcohol is better for you than more, and more than a certain amount is positively Very Bad. Two 'buts'...

First, I remember seeing a 'Notes & Queries' in the Guardian from someone asking whether the government's recommended limits had any medical grounding, and a response from someone who had been on the panel that set them. He said that for one thing, the advice up to that point had been that it was probably unwise for an adult male to drink more than the equivalent of a bottle of wine a day, and for a woman, rather less, and that for another, in coming up with the new figures they pretty much literally plucked some figures out of the air, erring on the low side because a) the whole exercise was driven by the moral panic of the day (and the government wanted low numbers) and  people tend to underestimate what they drink.

And second, Winston Churchill drank a bottle of brandy a day and lived to 90. Not that I'd recommend this to everyone, but it does illustrate just how much people's tolerances can vary. (Keith Richards is another who should be dead many times over...but he looks pretty sprightly, all things considered.)

Hence my question as to whether there was anything specific underlying your doc's recommendation. If there was - a liver test, say, then obviously it demands serious consideration. But if it was just a 'You're 55 now and blah de blah', I personally would be inclined to consider a few 'yeah buts'...(such as how important it is to your quality of life.)

Finally, my Dad was told by a doc that if he didn't give up his bottle a day of red wine, he'd be dead within 2 years. He said that to him, life without red wine wasn't worth living, and he'd take his chances. He outlived that prediction by over a decade - and enjoyed his Rioja every step of the way.

Sorry to hear this dellzeqq. I would have to agree with some who say this is quite a lot in relative terms. It's about what I am likely to imbibe over the period of a year. But as my Mum said as she rolled herself a cigarette outside the hospital having just come round from a three day coma brought on by a tumour in her lung and too much tea, you've got to die of something and some things are too good to give up.

Look on the bright side, the Doc didn't say you had to give it up completely.

If you were drinking a bottle a night, then I'd say a helmet would be compulsory even is it isn't law

Blimey. I didn't realise it was so puritanical chez Linf. There's a big hill between the pub and my house - more booze doesn't get you up it faster but it prepares you mentally. And besides, you can never remember how hard it was to get home .

After a heavy night out in town, it takes me about 30 seconds to walk what usually takes 15 minutes if my memory serves me correctly

My mate decided to 'educate' me on the strength of 'aftershock' with a few slammers a couple of years ago. The good thing to come from it was an education on the perils of drinking for at 3am on a saturday night for my kids had to to hear me heaving it all up in the bathroom - which they still remind me of this from time to time

This Doc has been known to get through 35 units or more on Friday evening.
The resulting catastrophic hangover lasted till Wednesdayxx(
Sadly, photos were taken:blush:, and the negatives cost me a fortune...

I do remember joyfully announcing to my housemates after I'd been working for about 4-5 years, going to the pub and saying Well lads.. today I know I'm old.. because this week I've kept within the Government limit of 31 pints for the week.. to be told apparently it was 21, and the number was for units not pints.
