part P of the building regs is reason enough:

Who is responsible for making sure that electrical work in your home meets the requirements of Part P?
By law, the homeowner or landlord must be able to prove that all electrical installation work meets Part P, or they will be committing a criminal offence.

Local authorities have the power to make homeowners or landlords remove or alter any work that does not meet the requirements of the Building Regulations.
Yes all that says is it must be up to the standard not that the person who installs it is qualified

What electrical work is notifiable?
From April 2013 electrical work in a dwelling, or associated with its surroundings, is notifiable to a local building control body where the work includes:

• the installation of a new circuit, whether at low voltage (typically 230 V) or extra-low voltage); or
• the replacement of a consumer unit (fusebox); or
• any alteration or addition to an existing circuit in a special location*, whether at low voltage (typically 230 V) or extra-low voltage

*A special location is a room containing a bath or shower, swimming pool or a sauna heater.

An alteration or addition to an existing circuit in a room containing a bath or shower is notifiable only where carried out in the space surrounding a bath or shower.
NEW circuits is the operative word, which means connection to the consumer unit, if the wiring comes off an existing circuit then it can be done by anybody. I'm just about to start a house extension under building regs, I intend to do all the electric work myself as all I will be doing is extending the existing ring main & lighting circuits.

No offence to the OP but I never really understand why so many people pay for electricians. Of all the trades it is one where the tools are cheap even if you don't already have them; and if you paid attention in GCSE Physics/have access to Google you have the knowledge to do almost any domestic job.

At work they let the handyman who is apparently a bona fide "electrician" loose on three phase power despite the fact he has difficulty getting the lighting working properly.

To the OP I hope you get it resolved. If he has been tripping the RCD I would be double checking the work myself. I have seen examples where the earth lead has been cut to "resolve" that problem.

If your house burns down due to the electrical job you have carried out in your house. Is the house still covered by the insurance? It isnt in Denmark. Which is why we need to use professionals for certain jobs.

My home insurance (Aviva) says it will not pay for accidental damage caused by "faulty or unsuitable materials or design or poor workmanship". So if (as a "professional" kitchen fitter did to a mate) you decide to DIY connect an entire kitchen's electrics to the fuse box using 13A wire because you already have a whole roll of that already... then your insurance will probably go "you muppet" and leave you with a barbequed house. But if you are competent but a freak accident still happens then you get a large cheque.

Incidentally my mate used the kitchen fitters because they had been recommended!

But in that instance you would have a claim against the fitters

I can't find that they're VAT registered on the gov.uk site, company name is not coming up. I'm almost certain he's committing VAT fraud & wish to report him. Can a kind person on here with more grey matter just double check for me please?

Their website is all show & they have no substance to back it up. Also it's evident they've reviewed themselves.

It's not just the money, I'm offended by their lies. I at least want the VAT back which is £50.

Sorry, I know it's not a laughing matter, but I don't know which I find more entertaining, their 'reviews':

Report them, if they are committing VAT fraud, I'd wager they aren't declaring all their income to the taxman either

e.g.

https://www.gov.uk/government/organ...ontact/customs-excise-and-vat-fraud-reporting
https://www.gov.uk/report-an-unregistered-trader-or-business
https://www.gov.uk/report-cash-in-hand-pay

You should be able to find their company number via the Companies House website (or Google)

Doubt you'd get your £50 back any time soon though (if ever) but could stop them screwing other people over

What an absolute useless search function on companies house, I put in

JJ Electrical 48,431 matches found
JJ Electrical & Property 722,771 matches found
JJ Electrical & Property Services 1,116,093 matches found

What kind of cock-eyed search system increases the number of hits the more you define it

I would second the "Check-a-trade" style websites. Thankfully we were covered for gas and electrical problems by British Gas who were good in our experience, but the one privateer gas bloke (recommended on check-a-trade) was brilliant. He didn't make a mess and only charged £40 for an hours labour which I think is about the going rate.

Despite being able to do most jobs I often prefer to use a tradesman, first I can earn more than most charge in the same amount of time. Second I like to spend my spare time with my wife, rather than a tool box. The exception being decorating which we both enjoy and do together.

Appears to be no company registered at that address (although they could have their company registered elsewhere, this is a terraced house)...however, there are a couple of companies now dissolved at that address...e.g. a home type business dissolved 3 months ago (only lasted about 7 months)...could be a coincidence

I suppose @Milzy could know if the two 'officers' are involved in JJ Electrical still

The kind that, for your first search, gives you everything with JJ or Electrical in; for your second, all those + everything with Property in; for your third, all those + everything with Services in. The kind we used to have to use in the days of superfast 128kbps modems. You young puppies have no idea what a breath of fresh air it was when google first appeared. At last you could find what you were looking for. Radical or what?
