Worked with a lad years back who was due in court to get banned. His brief told him not to drive there, but he did. Went into court, got banned, solicitor insisted on driving him home and he had to get the bus back to the car park near the court to drive his car home.

It's extremely common for banned drivers to simply drive home from Court. Proof on it's own that disqualified driving should carry mandatory prison sentence and forfeiture of any cars owned by the offender.

On the taking the car away theme, how about the car is confiscated and given back when the ban is finished and a retest passed?

In the meantime it goes into a car pool to be of use to the community, think of the volunteers who ferry patients to appointments, etc.

Can you imagine the blood pressure of some utter bellend, knowing that his pride and joy is being used as a coffin dodger's taxi?

Edit: and if you're caught whilst banned your car and licence are gone forever.

And make them watch it being done, and afterwards a couple of cyclists can dance on the wreckage to complete the torture.

Keeping it in some kind of communal use is probably a bit more sensible though.

I don't see the point in crushing the cars, they haven't done anything wrong, just sell them on to a new owner, that way at least it uses less Earth resources.

Problem with that is, in Bradford the drivers don't own the cars. They are either hired or, nobody owns them, they are shared "pool" cars.
Then the driver is responsible for recompensing the rightful owner.

Which while I know it sounds nice in theory, no government would ever have the knackers to pass a law like that unfortunately.

There are no "owners" or "drivers" in most of these cars, they are shared cars with multiple users. Hired cars, maybe fine the hirer, but he'd be bailed out as he was most likely a front anyway.

It doesn't matter, it's bye bye car, someone somewhere will be losing out and I can't see them not chasing the driver for compensation.
