I really don't understand why that don't make motorists stop and give way to cyclists as they are going to have to give way to traffic on the main road they want to join anyway. Don't they do that in Holland?

Yup.
The when I've been over there the bits I've seen where it happens have a raised area, a wide speedhump, at kerb height presented across the side road and road markings on either side. Cyles thus don't have to deal with kerbs either. Seems a very sensible solution to me as cars will stop (or a least slow down) in a place that is noted for being hazardous to cyclists.
