Electric assist bikes have a massive impact for those that need them. I work with a colleague who mentioned her partner had got one to get to work. He was a larger lad, but if that get's them to wok, without feeling half dead, they will be the cyclists next year. I said that it will help him get into it, and he could then go no assisted. It's a way to get into cycling. Most folk that get an e-bike are serious about it.

For the albe bodied, suppose if you had a few spare grand and liked to go on the windup...

Especially as they look like BSOs. Go the whole hog and stick a basket on the front and doggie trailer on the back.

70+ year old gent was putting me to shame, so I upped my effort a lot, caught and passed him. It was only after I passed him I noticed he was on an ebike. I then had to maintain the effort to not lose face, and found there's no option to "turn off at the next side road" on a canal. Felt like I almost killed myself!
I had a similar experience in the Netherlands recently. Very slowly gaining on an elderly couple on shopping bikes. Came alongside for the overtake just as we started the steep-ish slope up the side of a bridge. Saw they were e-bikes as I came alongside, and then had to pedal like a madman to avoid the ignomy of being re-taken by pensioners before the crest of the bridge.

I have just signed up to Strava. Some of those guys must be using fast e-bikes. I'm 750th out of 1200 on part of my ride to work (and that's my fast bit).
Yeah, gave up on strava segments. There’s a couple near me, uphill ones. First about half a mile, the other a mile. Both KoMs are claimed at about 70mph.

The only way I'll get a KoM is to create a segment in my back garden!

No, this was in the UK. Where I used to live I hardly ever saw people walking, as I said, mostly laziness, but also poor planning when the estate was designed and built.

Everything needs to change. Estates need to be designed and built that encourage walking and cycling with green, traffic-free routes, and a generally less car-centric approach.

Trouble is, while other countries have been doing the right thing, Britain has been doing the wrong thing for 30-40 years. Ever since car ownership exploded really.

I know a woman who drives her Ford Mundano about 100 feet to her local supermarket to get fags then drives back home. She could open her window and buy the fags she is that close. She does look and sound like death warmed up though.
