When I went on a bike maintenance course a few years ago the mechanics told me that they have a specialised tool for getting extra leverage on stuck bottom brackets. They call it the 4-foot-long-scaffolding-pole ™. Stick it over the end of the wrench and Newtonian mechanics does the rest.

I would have tried that but I didn't have anything useful to hand like that sadly. Also, the Shimano BB tool only penetrates less than 1cm into the socket so it slipped every time I exceeded a certain pressure

Yeah, don't feel bad about failing to shift 'im - they're famously immoveable when they're old. On a more positive note, once you've got that new Shimano installed, that should see you through years of trouble-free cycling: those UN54s are bullet-proof (or so I've heard).

I got the bike back from the LBS this morning, it took two of them half an hour to get it off. Other than that, it was fine although they did note it hadn't ever been greased and it was over tightened at the factory, which is what I suspected. The bike's only 2 years old so hopefully corrosion isn't too big a factor in it

Now I'm going to head downstairs and continue with the fitting of the BB, hopefully no more headaches.....

....except I noticed that in my haste to loosen the BB cup yesterday, I forgot to place towels under the handlebars, now I've got scuff marks on my shifters! Aaaaaarrrrhgggghhh!
