Similar thing but a recent hotel booking I found the hotel through a website, but rang them direct to book it - they mentioned how much they lost to booking websites so I'm going to try to book direct from now on.
Takeaways if I was going to order one today, I'd want to ring direct and pay cash, but I'm on a break from them for weight reasons ATM

We always find the hotel on the web sites
then try to ring them direct to book
we don;t often save much, if anything, but at least the money goes to the actual hotel
We did have one small place that said he would only accept booking from the website - I presume they had reserved a certain number and he couldn;t release them
I have got a small discount from some places
often a free breakfast or something
but it is the principal of where the money goes that is important to us!

He might not have been setup to take payments perhaps, small places might not be. I don't stay in hotels often but going to try and book direct in future.

I don’t know about the UK but on my travels once in India, once in Burma I've booked 2 nights and walked out after the first 'cos they were dreadful (I mostly use 1 or less star places - more interesting). Booked online through booking.com who take deposit and I pay hotel on arrival but both these hotels tried to invoke their clause to get booking.com just take the 2nd night off my card. e-mail exchange with booking.com easily resolved without hotels getting money but it does seem there are clauses hotels can use.

Devon and Cornwall FB post yesterday - they had a picture of a lorry with 19 illegal ebikes on. They had seized them all in a 1 day operation.
Worryingly my Dad was at Totnes agricultural show the other week and a shop/dealer had a stand there. The chap was trying to sell my Dad an illegal ebike. Dad said "are they road legal then?" And the salesman said they are fine as long as you keep to the speed limit. Trouble is, people might believe this trollop and buy one, instead of reporting it

Not just Devon, there were a few seizures yesterday. I read of ones in Birmingham and Cambridge.

Well - he is right
they are legal as long as you stick to the speed limit
AND
wear the correct helmet
have the correct motorcycle license (maybe moped??)
have the correct insurance
have the correct registration with the DVLA
have the proper number plates mounted
have an MOT
so he just missed a couple of things out
but what he said was true

So it's less of a crackdown on illegal bikes, and more of a illegal working crackdown. So yes it's good that the illegal bikes were seized, but perhaps that could be the main reason for a crackdown next time.

Yes - teh local paper if crowing about how the Police have confiscated an illegal electric bike found running around a park in Runcorn
I know that park due to cycling past it on the canal and the people on the bike must have been idiots
there are several paths in and out of the place that could have been used to escape unless the copers had about 10 cars worth of people to block them all off
as usual - they only catch the morons
although - I suppose it is the morons who ride them badly and need catching
anyway - one more illegal electric motorbike off the road
only another few hundred to go - then they can start on the next town/village
