Be Honest With Me...........is my carbon frame really going to melt ??

I wouldn't be worried about the melting factor more worry about the fact that CF gets fat if you don't ride it enough. If you hunch down over the bars, should you get caught in a shower, you should keep the worst of the wet off.
I think that you should pamper your baby bike by taking her to bed to keep her warm, after a soaking. I am sure your wife will understand.

I wouldn't be worried about the melting factor...

Absolutely. It the dissolving that would be worrying me.

Oh dear..... I was thinking about a carbon bike next.... I'll stick with my alloy frame with carbon forks..... all I do now is buy a new set of forks every time they get wet that way they don't weaken through the dissolving effect, trouble is I've 104 pairs of rain damaged forks in my shed

Hope your neighbours don't find out with all these risks connected with your stash.

Sorry Dave but you dont deserve to own a carbon bike, Why was it not wrapped in clingfilm? why when it started to rain did you not stop go to the nearest house and explain your dilemma? :tongue::tongue::tongue:

I dunno a fellow forumite asks an honest question and gets a load of sarcastic nonsense back.
Of course it wont melt or dissolve if it gets wet, nor will it give off noxious fumes. It is not a good idea to rub it down with sandpaper either nor should you cover it in petrol or put a blow torch on it. If a carbon bike gets wet it merely softens,if it gets really really wet it can soften to such a degree that it can't support it's own weight. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as you will find that most fishing rods were once carbon bikes (Chinese frames are particulalry good) which their owners got too wet and were then able reform them and start a new hobby :okay:

No it won't "melt" as such, but if you get the right conditions and the right amount of water you can get drunk on the products :wahhey:

2 atoms of carbon combined with 3 molecules of water yield 1 molecule of ethanol (hic) plus one molecule of oxygen
2*C + 3*H2O -> C2H6O + O2

You can't dry carbon fibre, which will slowly dissolve over time (hours) once wet.
To remove the moisture residue, you should rub down the entire frame using coarse sandpaper, removing around 4mm.
Finally, soak a cloth in petrol and rub the entire frame until liberally coated, and dry the frame carefully over a source of 'organic' heat (ie; naked flame) such as candles, gas ring etc.
Do you know......I tell my OH.........those people on CC are my real friends. The loving advice they give is-well-heart warming.
Thank you my friend.
