Am trying to ge the kids out more, just short rides to the park, trouble is they have ended up with horrific bikes, my eldest got given a cheap full suss mountain bike, made of solid rock or so it feels, its like being on a lead spacehopper, enough to put them off cycling forever !
.. it's lots of fun if you can make it happen, and lower your average speed enough so they can keep up .. depending on their age, of course!! Little-LC (not-quite-8yo) can manage 6-7mph for 13 miles or so, with biscuit breaks. Littlest-LC is on a Tail-Gator behind me so spends her time shouting at me to go faster.

Welcome Wacko! 23mpg? That's not bad, I'd have been well chuffed with that in my Beemer, I sometimes used to get 15-18mpg. Bit of a big and thirsty beast it was.

What's your current route ?

I might be able to suggest something - I used to ride from Romiley to Knutsford almost every day and return (40 miles return) and would come through Wilmslow, or Alderley then hit the lanes. How near Wilmslow Centre are you / which side ? I know the lanes pretty well round there from commuting and club rides. Most need good lights though in Winter !

Wow! I though the low MPG and the thirst for super was a japanese banzai wagon-only characteristic. I'd be seriously questioning the 'Aero' tag as well.

Anyway, enough of cages - welcome to the forum.

Heh, back when I had one, I used to think of it like this: all the speed and power of a V8 with all of the fuel economy of a V8

Fossyant, I go down Knutsford road, turn right at Christopher Jacksons, then left down Warford rd, then immediate right down Noah's Ark lane which is a single track road, usually quite peaceful, that brings me out on the road to Ollerton where I turn right onto Chelford road to mix it with the Artics, follow that down for a mile and a bit and I am at work, any sugestions gratefully received !

Occasionally go through Knutsford, might be better over winter.

I am hooked, it is just some much more satisfying than driving, bit of a sense of acheivement, as for saving money, not yet as I have spent in theory about a grand (still paying for bike through work) and only save a couple of hundred quid in petrol.

However the bike versus car equation is not simple, I dont need to pay to exercise, I dont wear my car tyres out, I eat more food, I shower at work not home (water and Electricity) and all these variables.

You cant match the sense of freedom you get on a bike in a car, its like being a kid again, the ability to stop anywhere and not have to find a parking space.

It polarises your modd, a good ride, wind behind you on a sunny day with agreeable traffic versus dark, cold rainy with 4wd angry persons wheras driving generally is pretty much the same.

I miss the radio I suppose but listen in the shower at work.

Thanks for the welcome !

I did the same route - used to Work at Booths Hall. Noah's Ark Lane is great - just get some good lights - ps is the Farm still there, or has it become flats - cos the farm yard used to get really messy riding through it.

Chelford Road for that last mile isn't too bad. As for an alternative, carry on Knutsford Road, through Mobberly and straight into Knutsford. That route will be safer when it get's ICY - Faulkners Lane / Marthall Lane get pretty bad in the ice.

Guess where I work ?

Yes, booths park !

A neight used to do that route and said exactly that, the temperature plummets through that bit, -8 apparently.

Have dont the Knutsford way as well, a bit more in the way of civilisation, might alternate it a bit more, and there is a great brekkie van in the layby on the way into Knutsford, truly a wonderful sight to a hungry cyclist hoving out of the mist as the sun comes up.
