For some reason I've never got on with Chouff, and I doubt that would change here! I do like cherries in beer, but they should be dark and juicy and bitter, and the beer should be a sour - either lambic or barrel aged landers Red. Otherwise it's just too sweet for me. Definitely looks like a "in small quantities" beer!

I'm in Stevenage for work tonight and when I checked in I was given a voucher for a free drink, the alternatives to this were, Stella, Bud, or some cider whose name I can't remember.

Delirium Tremens isn't a wheat beer, but like many Belgian beers it's bottle conditioned so you probably got a load of yeast sediment in your pour. Some people like the yeast, some don't, so there can be a bit of skill involved (and patience when you get a bottle home, to let it settle). It's quite common to pour about two thirds of the bottle and start drinking it Clear, then to pour in the rest including the yeast sediment, giving two distinct tastes to the beer.

It can have a slight sourness to it (especially on tap), but it's not a sour beer at all. I find it too sweet and over-spiced (with cardamom I think), which makes it a bit cloying.

Lots of people absolutely love it, but I'm inclined to think that's mainly because of the pink elephant and reputation for being very strong. Nothing wrong with strong beers, but it certainly trades on it.

and yeah Id agree its reputation is higher than the beer itself, but I went to a beer tasting by the brewery once and they do lots of nice other beers, just got to get beyond the obvious one first.

but no its not a sour beer,and I think they showed this at the beer tasting or maybe a bar in Belgium I went in, you can pour the beer clear, carefully into a beer glass, and then pour the yeast sediment into a shot glass, and treat it as like two drinks and the taste between them does give you this sweet & very sour combination, which is an interesting way to drink it.

though Ive seen just as many turn the bottle upside down and pour everything straight in, which gives you a more blended taste. which tbh I preferred.

I just always remember doing a booze cruise to Brugge once in my youth, and stocking up with just random cherry beers from the hypermarche because they were different to beer you could buy in the UK and I liked cherries, and god it took so long to eventually drink it all, they were awful some too sour, some too sweet, I think it put me off cherry beers to the point I just automatically avoided them ever since, even though Id probably find some of them quite drinkable now if I picked the decent breweries versions

My local here in Copenhagen has Lindemans "Kriek Lambic" on as a standard, and while my new year's resolution was to let people like what they like that's where I draw the line. The chances of it genuinely being lambic are very, very slim - at most they've chucked a tiny amount of spontaneous fermented beer into the mix. And it's definitely not been steeped for a couple of years on fresh juicy black cherries - they've just added a load of sickly cherry syrup into it. Imagine Vault City (who make some very weird sours, but always hit the flavour they describe perfectly) made a "Cough Syrup Sour" and you wouldn't be all that far off. I honestly wouldn't be bothered if they hadn't called it lambic and kriek. "Sweet cherry sour 3.5%" - enjoy it kids, whatever floats your boat. "Kriek Lambic" - crime against beer. It sells very well though, mainly to young women who were never socialised into drinking beer like boys are (especially not since alcopops arrived on the scene). Hopefully it's a gateway to other sours, progressively less sweet and more interesting ^_^

A Kriek from Cantillon or 3Fonteinen - or the Rodenbach Cherry is a different matter altogether, though I can't drink sour beer at the moment :cry:

Yellow stickered in Waitrose on Wednesday; I didn't want to be greedy, so I only bought two of each. Not sampled yet.
Might have bought more, but small rucksack and shopping bag were already pretty full of "approved" shopping.

I like the Peroni, completely different to the normal europiss Peroni that a lot of people rave over for some unfathomable reason.
