Not a beer recommendation but a book.

"Its The Beer Talking by Ian Clayton"

Published 2018 but I have only just got round to reading it.
I have to admit I have an interest as I know a lot of the pubs mentioned in the book and some of the people, also the accents and lifestyles.
A very good read.

I've had to have a kidney stone out, then a week later have the stent that was put in after the removal taken out.

Thanks to that I've not had any beer for a fortnight, hence I'm out of practice which has resulted in a Crackle style pour tonight.

I got this from Morrison's today and it's proper west coast, nice and bitter.

Went to Cambridge Beer festival today and list of beers sampled by the two of us ( halves and thirds!) were;

Ampersand (Diss Norfolk ) Affogato-8% Coffee stout
Brass Castle (Malton N Yorks) Bad Kitty -5.5% chocolate-vanilla porter
Driftwood Spars (Cornwall) Alfie's Revenge -6.5% red malt bitter
Elgoods (Wisbech Cambs) Double Dog -6.5% strong dark mild (stronger version of Black Dog mild)
Green Duck (Stourbridge W Midlands) Shoreline -5.4% caramel and chocolate stout with Maldon sea salt
Lacons (Gt Yarmouth Norfolk) Cherry Penny Black Porter - 8.4% sour cherries imperial porter
Nethergate (Pentlow Essex) Old Growler -5.% chocolate, coffee and roasted malt porter
Orkney (Quoyloo Orkney) Dark Island 4.6% Dark Chocolate,date and nuts
Roughacre (Clare Suffolk) The Hawker 4.8% rich porter, roasted barley and chocolate malts with challenger and admiral hops

Only missed out on Green Jack (Lowestoft) Baltic Trader an extra strong export stout that had just run out when I went to get it :sad:

Overall no duffers and the Green Duck,Ampersand and Lacons being the favourites although I've always liked the Dark Island and the Double Dog was a nice beefier version of one of my favourites Black Dog mild.

Was reasonably busy but no queues at the bars.

you werent tempted by the champion beer then ? though it would have tied with your Orkney for being the lowest abv in the selection ^_^

Fresh out of the Pinter tonight, After Midnight Belgian Ale, this is how pinter describe it -

This dark Belgian ale offers a deep malty sweetness with layers of caramel, toffee, and molasses. Rich notes of dark fruits like fig, plum, and raisin come through, balanced by classic Belgian yeast spices. Subtle hints of liquorice, chocolate, and coffee aid complexity, while the alcohol presence is smooth and warming.​


Supposed to be 5.8%, but if I was asked to do a blind test I'd call it an 8% Trappist.

Excuse the glassage, still can't believe it's a full pint, but I was in the Holiday Inn in Stevenage a few weeks ago and when I paid £6.95 I assumed I was buying the glass as well.

Straddle the line, discord and rhyme
Tasting day for the first two ales. Very similar, the only difference is the hop variety. They even came out at the same ABV which was a surprising piece of consistency.

First off, they're both completely flat, no head and no carbonation. I was a bit conservative with the priming sugar so I can ramp that up for the next batch. Second one gave the tiniest pop on opening and has a few tiny bubbles in it but I don't think that really counts.

Both very clear which is what I was aiming for. Current romantic partner has various intolerences so I've tried to minimise any suspended proteins and particulates. Should be gluten free if the endopeptidase has done its job.

Taste wise, there's not much malt character in them. Unsurprising as it's just cheap pale Maris Otter and malt extract with nothing interesting in it. Next experiments have got caramel and brown malt so should be more interesting.

WRT hops, I think I've got the amounts about right although a few more probably wouldn't hurt. Bitterness is OK but a bit more flavour, especially given the puny nature of the malt wouldn't go amiss. The azacca brew definitely has a lighter sort of taste to it than the cascade. I can taste the azacca more in the nose and the cascade more in the mouth. My most recent brew has both in so they should complement each other.

So pretty successful, it is beer. And it gave me the information I wanted in terms of base recipe even if it's not the best drink I've ever drunk. Next couple of batches have different variables in terms of malt and yeast but I've got all this to drink before I get round to testing those.
