I do use a GPS to guide me on my bike rides, but it is a dumb device which does not have Sat Nav capabilities. That suits me just fine. I like referring to maps and plotting the routes myself, and not relying on a machine to make decisions for me.
I let Google do the initial route ideas then I decide whether to follow them. The Sat Nav Mr Summerdays bought for when I wasn't there to navigate used to make rubbish decisions. He didn't always follow them and ended up binning it.

There is truth in that:smile:, asking for directions can be the start of a friendship I discovered, but not in darkest England.
The only time I have come a little unstuck was during the London Olympic construction works, Stratford Station was closed and I realised I'd have to cycle on to Harwich for the ferry. I couldn't find a map shop and no one I asked had a clue regarding directions to Harwich. Many said it was physically impossible to cycle such a distance. The lack of any directional knowledge among the natives was something I had never experienced before.

In London, if you can't get there by Underground, you can't get there.

SatNav is not an answer

It does a "Fastest" and "Most Direct" route

It does not do the "Guess which way the Wife wants to go" route

Am I the only one who doesn't have sat nav nowadays?

I'm not anti-sat nav, just very rarely need to find specific addresses in large towns while driving so never felt the need to buy one.
I have Google maps (embedded but not my favourite) and Here maps (better routes IMO and can be run totally offline so dirt cheap on data charges) on my smartphone, Both are rarely used but they're free.

I have never bought nor ever felt the need to buy a separate device to do the job since the advent of electronic routefinding.

I do have a music player, cameras, an old bombproof mobile just for phone calls, a computer and a notepad & pen that I still use, so sat nav is the only thing that my smartphone acts completely instead of.

Me too...i actually enjoy reading OS maps especially when we are on holiday, I love to sit down with a mug of tea and pour over the detail of the area and its landscape.

Still use gps for directions mind
Pernickerty pedant mode :

does it not make the maps a bit wet if you pour stuff over them

I hate myself sometimes.

I do love a good paper map though too. Son 2 is an army cadet and I love helping him plot his routes and check over his map & compass drills.
