Basic tool kit for home not one for out on bike.
Looking to start building a bike tool kit.
For beginners Calvin Jones top 6 are
8mm Allen key (one with handle)
Set of Allen keys
Chain tool
Cassette lock ring tool
Chain whip
Screwdriver

What to add to list the to get building a beginners tool kit? What brands are good quality tools?

If working on older bikes then a big adjustable (Bahco) and a headset spanner are needed and thin cone spanners.

A lot of budget tools are made from cheap soft steel, as are budget nuts and bolts on bikes.
Old tools from car boot sales may be better but I find few pro grade bike specific tools. Old cable cutters seem to be hard to find in good order.
Occasionally you find real gems in tools or spares, I found a tin of old cable outer ends that are way better than ones on the shop.

Have a look at the kits from Decathlon. Good value and decent quality.

Bottom bracket tool, if you have a threaded bottom bracket - make sure you get the right one.
Cable cutters.
Set of small files and at least one awl.
Cone spanners for hubs.
Tub of grease.
Grease gun.
Set of torx wrenches.
Chain tool.
Tool box.

That should cover the basics, you'll figure out the rest as you need it.

Rubber gloves - dermatitis is no fun.

Selection box of stainless nuts, bolts, Allen bolts, washes, nylons, all various sizes.

Definitely this. Getting grease under fingernails is never fun, less so if you a bit of a nail biter.
