I had the same quandary a few weeks ago. Posted on here and the spurcycle bell was recommended but they had sold out of the colour I wanted when I came to order. Had a look around and you can get the exact same bell, named as Rockbros online for a third of the spurcycle cost. It sounds great and I'm more than happy at 7 quid for a nice looking bell that doesn't look to out of place on a mtb.

Feels like another "damned if you do... '' to me. Some object to 'excuse me', and say I must use a bell, others object to bells. One woman claimed my bell upset the thing she claimed was her dog (actually thrown out of the wolf pack for excessive violence). Having little room for bells, and unable to find one that fits and stays put on the bars, I gave up and went back to shouting. Maybe if the Nello really is "as loud as a freight train" it might be worthwhile, because if i must clutter my bars something that wakes up dozies in boxes would be useful.

If you are going to use a bell on shared paths, you want one that doesn't shout "get out of my way", something that might make the people hearing it feel warm rather than hostile..

yes that is what I would like but it is like trying to find the holy grail of bells. They all say "get out of my way" to some extent and this is why I started this thread. I don't want the thread to turn into another debate about the use of bells but to find any solutions I may have missed. 99.9% of the time I don't need a bell as a simple "good morning" or an "excuse me" is sufficient but there is the very odd ocation that I wished I had one.

this is a fantastic idea and one I have thought about before. The example shown has a great noise that will alert people to your presents however it is far to bulky to be practical. When I say I have thought about it I mean to try and find a way to make the bike noisy enough to make pedestrians aware like putting a card the spokes as I did as a kid to make the motorbike noise.

For this to work in practice you need something small and you need to be able to turn it on and off as you ride

I know the coconuts are a jokey gimmick but it is almost close to working
If you are on a shared path you shouldn't be going over 5mph so a polite excuse me should be all that is needed - if you wish to go faster use the road.
And then the drivers moan because .... go on, guess. We actualy have one [person] lives in the village who has written to the local paper to complain (in separate letters) about cyclists using the road and about cyclists frightening her on the shared use path. You may have heard the cheering when she was caught doing 45 in a 30 zone.

That is just silly. I go running down the same path faster than 5 mph.

User9609 can I please refer you to my earlier post or we will end up going round in circles
