I'd thoroughly recommend a Rose. However they have lengthy delivery times and you can't easily test drive one (unless you live close to Finlay - the UK Rep). Certainly no use if you want a bike in the next week / two.

"I get the distinct impression that the OP has a figure in his head, but no real reasoning why. While 2 grand obviously gets you a better bike than one for half the price, if all you're doing is social riding, you don't need it. That's sensible advice.
I've given what I think is a really good option in a CAAD12 (possibly an even better frame than CF at that price point), but you can spend less than that and get a very nice bike that'll fill the OP's requirements and then some. Apologies if that offended you in some way."

Lets face it, (and I could be wrong) but most of us dont need half the stuff we have and if he really wants just a bike for social riding a triban will do the job as well as anything else. He doesn't need 105, or hydraulics etc etc, as the new tiagra is pretty good and bb7s are not bad brakes, but he wants them. If you ditch the carbon option, the best at that price with decent wheels is probably the planet X london road.

However at the £2k option, the ones I would look at other than the Defy and Roubaix are the cannondale synapase and trek domane.

Either way all of them should be dropping in price soon.

Ignoring the disc brake issue, how about the Ribble R872 105 they have on special at the moment ?
Good spec, full 11 speed 105, light, quick & importantly around £980.

It's a racy geometry though so don't know if that suits you.

Cheers, my mate has just ordered one of these so will get a chance to try it out soon. Have you owned a Ribble before?

No pal.

I have a carbon Sintesi with 10 speed Sram Force from 2012 & an aluminium Cube with 10 speed 105 from 2014 that's on C2W scheme.

Would like the R872, again on C2W scheme but then would also like a MTB too.

Personal opinion only, I think it looks a lot of bike for the money, haven't ridden one though, but might go to their premises & take a look as I can drive there in 45 mins.

I made the transition from MTB to road. In all honesty you get used to standard brakes in no time and they are cheaper in both cost and maintenance terms.

Having a nightmare with Rose at the moment, five month old bike and so far rear hub on dt swiss had a manufacturing fault and now right shifter is broken, not a simple job since its mech and hydr. The high end specs look great but buying from Germany in my experience has been horrid in terms of getting it repaired.

Ribble get a lot of bad press and bike snobs hate them. I have a R872 and not had a problem with it overall with the exception of a campy broken spoke in two years, and goes like pooh off a stick.

Sorry to hear this. Have you tried contacting Finlay (thier UK rep) directly ?

Yes, he advised not for the first time my LBS do not know what they are doing and just want to rip me off (though to be fair the first mech didn't have a clue and did rip me off), now if I can get the bike to a shop 25 miles away his trusted mechs will take a look, I do not drive and have no access to a car, I also got rid of the bike box the bike came in so stuck in a no win situation. I am now going to the 2nd LBS as when the cable is slackened the gears start shifting to some degree but maybe Finlay was right its a stuck cable in the shifter and the LBS do not want to waste time with internal cabling. Popping down there later and we shall see but I really do not want to replace the shifter £145 for nothing or for the sake of saving a mech some work.

Tricky situation. I too intend to dispose of my bike box shortly and then hope there's nothing so major happens that it needs to be returned. That certainly is a problem with ordering from Rose for sure. But I suspect this circumstance is quite rare. I've found Finlay so far to be very helpful, but that was predominantly in the buying / ordering process.

I'm not sure of the exact specification you have, but do you watch the GCN videos ? They not only have the (excellent) entertainment videos but also comprehensive service guides / instructions if you fancied having a look yourself. You can find them on YouTube, just search for GCN.

I'm not sure how useful it is but many mech's down south boast about the Cytech qualification. Certainly the guys I use are qualified and they are extremely knowledgeable. However I suspect that it's far more about the individual than the qualification.

Good luck !

Thanks Andy for replying. I have taken the bike back to the LBS and they will take a more detailed look at it, I think they were worried the cable is not housed all the way through the internal routing. This is the second major fault with a bike in 5 months, its too much for me, I was looking for a work horse commuter/winter bike and it seems this just is not fitting the bill at the moment. Maybe its the tech not been developed enough on road bikes, I think hydr discs are the way forward but I might sell the bike and give them more bedding in time within the industry.

Finlay has been helpful but we are at the point where we are not progressing faults, its fine if you live near his 3rd party workshop (not a Rose shop) and can drive the bike over, if you live up north you are stuck wasting leave days for pick ups and deliveries.

Could you arrange for it to be picked up with Paisley Freight. I have had a bike picked up and delivered on weekends with them? They will also pick up from work if your not too far from the station and can carry your boxed bike?

Do you have any mates with a car who could do the 45 min journey to the shop with you?

Hi Chris, I do not have a bike box and I work 8 miles from home so taking it on public transport is not an option as I wouldn't be able to take both the box and bike home. I could ask a friend to drive the 50 mile round trip but its not the point, I have been supplied a dud imho and I shouldn't have too just to prove to Rose the bike is faulty.

I'll see what the LBS say once they have tried to fix it, I did mention to them what finlay has said and judging by that it should be a easy fix.

Sounds like rose should arrange for it to be collected and sorted. I'd be talking to CAB and my credit card company if they weren't prepared to sort it, after all it's under warranty surely
