£1k will get you a new Arkose X or Alfine 8, both of which have hydro discs, which is pretty good for £1k. Both babe slightly quirky gears ti achieve that spec for the price

Genesis Day One 10 about £470 I think you can get em.

I’ve heard the frames are quite popular amongst real cross racers as they smash up fairly frequently and these can be replaced cheap.

Gravel bike more then? Get a Kinesis frame and then you can build to your own spec

What defines value for money for you? Do you have a minimum groupset spec (bearing in mind parts cost more the higher up the food chain you go). A 1x11 might be good, look at Planet X? Local to you?

How hilly is the commute?

You could do worse than a Pinnacle from Evans otherwise . Go test ride

You mention 1k. C2W? If so are you restricted on retailer?

I suppose spec wise I'd like gravel/cross bike ally frame. Hydro disc brakes. And preferably 105 or simalar sram group set.

The Boardman ticks your boxes but it’s a 1x11 set up not a double 105

As much as I like white bikes, might not be the best colour for a mucky off road commute

Yeah had a good look at the Planet X offerings, the xla? Looks decent as did The full monty (shame about colour) the green London road is decent but I think I comes with slicks for that price. Not sure. My girlfriend has a specialised diverge that I might have to steal and chuck cross tyres on

I did last season on an XLA after breaking a crosslight. It's light and stiff and at 200 quid for the frameset I can chuck it at banks with gay abandon. I'll probs replace it after next season.
