I train very much using a heart monitor to control my effort. an intersting thing I have noticed is if I ride in an aero position , as in elbows on the handlebars, bum on the tip of the seat, I can acheive a much higher speed for less heart rate than if I try to acheive this in an upright position.
now this is on an exercise bike to remove wind resistance and such.

From what I understand there is a trade off in power vs aero. Without training you'll have a lower power output in an aero position. With training you can end up with more power in aero than upright.

What's the best position to get in when cycling?

Obviously the more aerodynamic the better but I find it uncomfortable. Does it make that much difference to get into the aero tuck that makes it beneficial to be uncomfortable?
Two questions here really, whilst first has been answered by others, in so much as it depends on what you wish to achieve.

The second, well I find it tough to tuck, I'm tall, ride fairly upright and end up with a stiff neck. I tend to only tuck in fairly high wind and even then for very little time. For me, at my speed,(16-23mph) the difference is negligible in "normal" conditions

maybe whats the most effective cycling position.
though I've tried aerobars going up very steep hills and without an extra set of lungs its a no no.

what are you trying to achieve?
a fast ride?
a leisurely ride?
neck ache?
or just enjoying yourself out on the bike?

1 of my bikes (expedition/off road tourer) is almost bolt upright. my mtb more forward but still plenty of room to move around and look around, my road bike, more aerodynamic and takes more to enjoy the scenery.

(now wait for everyone else to contradict me )

She's wrong on all points. Totally.:boxing:
