Going back to the metal fatigue thing a minute. Presuambly steel hangers, integral to the frame, will withstand the fatigue thing better than replaceable alloy hangers, which, I understand, are designed to snap in the event of a crash/major chain entanglement, saving your TI,i/Al/CF loveliness.

I'm going to give bolt-on-spare-wheel method a go.

I have a birthday coming up in a couple of weeks or so. Now I know what to say if someone happens to ask what I would like for my birthday.

I bet I still end up with another stupid sweater that will end up in my brand new never worn stupid sweater drawer along with a half dozen or so others.

You can see easily when a wheel is not true, but you would be hard pressed to see when the rear mech hanger is not aligned properly.

I just looked at a Youtube Park Tool video on this tool . If your wheel wasn't true would it affect the accuracy of the hanger alignment?
No - you use the same point on the rim (ie at the valve) for taking the readings, rotating it to 12, 6, 9 and 3 o'clock
