Less than 1% of punters show a cosistant profit its no good following radio 4 or newspaper tipsters they never show a profit because they pick to many favourites you must look for weak favourites to oppose they may not suit the going ,or dont like a left hand track the distance may be wrong or the jockey isnt on form also trainers lay out horses for certain target races running them over inadequate distances until the day of the big gamble arrives its a minefield and the average punter has no chance . I dont play slot machines its a mugs game and I dont play cards because I know im no good at it and them Ray Winstone ads should be banned for encouraging mug type bets ,but it is possible to win long term on horses if you know what you are doing ,most punters in our local bookies are fun punters just having small bets for entertainment there are a few with a problem same as the pub has problem drinkers but you cant ban things just because a few people cant control themselves.

For many years I've had the occasional bet on the Grand National and maybe the odd MotoGP race or big football game, but I've got online this year and regularly bet on football.

I have to say I really quite enjoy it, much to my surprise. I keep an accurate tally of my wins / losses and assuming Leicester win or draw tonight I'll be £34.26 in profit this year! I've never been more than -£50 / +£100, but even if I lose £50 over the year I think the entertainment is worth it.

Anyone else indulge?
I have never and will never gamble...ever.

A tenner says you do though!

Come,on...6 pages in and no one has pulled that one yet.

Back in the days of the ZX Spectrum there was program called Punter's Pal that had an 80% success rate if you entered all the horses for every meeting that day and backed the 3 that the program came up with. I didn't use it much but got a couple of 12-1s when I did.
if your knuts are big enough you could always win a £1000. just keep backing favourites with proportionally increasing bets until one wins. Just for ease of calculations, if for instance all the favourites were evens, 1000 on the first one, if it looses, 2000 on the second, if it looses, 3000 on the third and just keep going until one wins, it will happen and you will eventually be £1,000 in pocket - but it could get scary if 30 lost in a row...
Is that true....I mean what's to stop your pick from failing every time, for a lifetIme?

If it did actually work, would fund managers not be playing these odds on an hourly basis...perhaps they are.

It has been tried it doesn't work plus its very difficult to get large bets on with bookies these days except for big meetings like RoyalAscot ,Cheltenham,York etc

I think the last time I was in a bookie's was when I was about 14, and my dad sent me in to pop a bet on the Grand National, while he kept the engine running outside (wasn't a good spot for parking). Have never bet, but I know a lot of people who are mildly obsessed with it.

First race lose £1,000 second race 2 grand third race your are losing 3 grand so you put 4 on fourth race you are now 7 down so put 8 on the fifth that losesyou are now losing £15,000
So you now put 16 grand on if it loses you are 31 grand down so you put 32 grand on that loses you are now trying to get 64 grand on with a bookie in the hope of winning a grand after that it really snowballs covering all your losses plus a grand even pros can have 20 losers during a bad spell

Well done User9609 seems like you have been reading Gordon Browns get rich quick at bookies paperback .I must get myself a copy.

I hate the proliferation of TV ads. If you are playing virtual roulette on your phone at the bus stop, or bingo on the tablet whilst ignoring your kids, I would suggest it's a problem. Not, as the cool looking people in the ads would suggest, harmless entertainment.

The bookies want cash strapped people to gamble in the hope of escaping poverty. The more cash lost, the more they hope people will chase the odds to recover it.

But its OK, they are very caring and socially responsible, just look at the minuscule warnings on display. Bit like the local smack n crack dealers printing "enjoy responsibly" on their tenner bags.

The 'infallible' betting system (double your stake every time you lose) works fine in principle. Statistically, whatever you are betting on will win eventually, and because you always doubled your stake you will always be ahead. Casino owners know this - hence the idea of a 'house limit'.

Think of betting on red at roulette (ignoring the zero for a moment):
Bet £1 on red. Black comes up. Loss £1.
Bet £2 on red. Black comes up, Loss £3.
Bet £4 on red. Black comes up. Loss £7.
Bet £8 on red. Red comes up. Win £8, lost £7, profit £1.

There are only two ways this can fail, provided you have unlimited resources. One is if your choice never comes up, which in the long term is statistically almost impossible. The other is if someone stops you playing when they see what you are up to. "Sorry, Sir, the management have decided you are no longer welcome in this establishment."

The idea of unlimited resources is a hurdle too, as your stake amount will be increasing exponentially and will soon represent more pounds than there are atoms in the universe.
