I asked: "Anyway, who would run wheels of any value on a "town bike" which they are going to lock up in a place with public access?"

Tell me you lock and leave your van Nicholas with expensive wheels routinely in a public place. Bike Security v2.

Do you feel lucky? Clearly you do.
Are the D-lock and security skewers sufficent mitigation of risk? I guess it is for you and the neighbourhood you live in and your extent of trust in fellow (hu)man.
Would you be sad if you lost your beloved?

There’s no updates here for a while. Mrs BC and I are buying Cube Kathmand’s and obviously concerned about security. Any recent recommendations on locks and other measures such as GPS tracking?

In a recent CADE YouTube video where several locks were attacked with an angle grinder, the Squire D16 was the cheapest lock that withstood 10 minutes of angle grinding activity.
As referenced by @Punkawallah here.

IME:

  • RFID chips may get you re-united with your bike, but it might be several years later when the police recover it and return it to you and the state its in, you might not want it back. They aren't much of a deterrant either.
  • Don't leave an expensive bike with someone else - not even for a second - whilst your back is turned, they could be mugged and injured for it

Because I don't think it's already been said:
  • If using a D lock - use the smallest one that will fit around your bike and the bike stand
  • If using a secondary lock - ideally use a different type or one at least made by a different manufacturer

Puzzle game procrastinator!
I recently saw a video of a theft where the guy was not cutting through the lock but the standard cycle loop it was attached to
They often look a lot easier to cut through than a top quality d-lock!

Obviously, the thief couldn't then ride off on the bike but they could easily chuck it in the back of a vehicle and drive off with it.
