Hi all
I had a pair of cheap pannier bags for years - many years but seldom used them
Over Lockdown they were brilliant and I used them for shopping a lot and continued to do so in summers after that

Well last year they developed a hole in the bottom

They were one of the type which has 2 bag joined by a piece of fabric which goes over the rack
and is held on by bits of Velcro in awkward places that takes ages to sort out
but they worked

Anyway - summer is coming and shopping by bike is getting more attractive again

so - what to do

Ideally I would like a pair that clip on and off easily - but are not easily stolen - which may be mutually exclusive
clipped on so I can leave one on for normal rides and just clip the other one on quickly for shopping

Ideally also collapsable so they can be big for shopping
but collapse and held smaller for normal ride which just need puncture kits and a can of coke or whatever
and ones that do not go over the top of the rack so I am e.g. easily take a jumper/coat off and stick it on the rack if I need to when I get too hot ona ride

any recommendations??

any ideas welcome as I am not sure what is available

TIA

You know what people will say..... Ortlieb. I have front rollers (called Sport now) for commuting, and recently bought the gravel bags for bike touring as they have a double lower clip for holding the bags on over rough ground.

Indeed.
Get a pair of Ortliebs, you can then shop in the rain for the next 20 years ^_^

i know the weather in this country can be rubbish

and I know that service levels in shops are sometimes pretty bad

but I was not planning on shopping for 20 years - especially if it is raining!!

The default choice will always be Ortliebs and I've generally been very happy with mine.

Hardly infallible but I just run a cable lock through the handles when I lock the bike up; despite the fact the bags hold their value very well used there doesn't seem to be much appetite to nick them, while obviously you never want to leave anything of value in them as they'll never be secure in this capacity.

As for going super small, then nope that's not possible. You could look at Topeak MTX panniers that have a 'zip out' side pannier - but you need an MTX rack. The MTS range just straps on.

These are fab, I have been using these for many years. They have got much more expensive but still good value. Even easier if you have the slide on version with the compatible rack but there are ones that velcro on to any standard rack (I have both)

The GLW bought a pair of Carradice cotton duck panniers in 2003. They've had a hell of a pounding since and apart from the mesh pockets being shot and the panniers looking a bit tatty, they're still going strong - ! ^_^

I like the topeak range. I used smaller version when I used to commute. Easily clicked on/off the rack for taking the bag into the office.

Used value is bonkers. I would have got some more front rollers for bike packing (didn't want to use my work pair as it's a faff unpacking the work stuff) but the used prices for tatty ones meant I bought a set of new 'gravel' bags with the extra lower hook.
