Don't get me started on cheap money, and all the damage it has wrought...
I do my part to keep the envy of others at bay by driving a 20 year old car

You have a car?

Flash git.

Right.

150k in the Bank; but hacking around in a cheap’ish car - everyone presumes you’re just getting by.

50k car on your drive, latest fashion, 2 hols a year, designer watch - all on the never-never with barely a pot to pi55 in = everyone thinks you’re doing very well for yourself 🙄

Not just the car, but buying stuff secondhand, yellow stickering, foraging, cooking from scratch, not having sky / netflix etc...

People do get so sniffy if you live within your means. So much is about appearances. But I'm content with how I live and don't give a flying flamingo about what other people think. Although currently, things I've been doing for years are considered trendy.

Happiness is curling up by the fire with a good book and a cat on my lap.

The peer pressure at school was horrendous though, as almost everyone in my year came from a far wealthier background than I - diplomats' daughters and footballers' daughters and the like. So it does give you a certain perspective.

I know. When I were a lad my Dad had to give me a piggy back everywhere while I made "vroom vroom" noises. Kids these days don't know they're born.

I remember when we got a car
When my mum died we 3 kids age 7-11 got £200 in our savings account , when my dad remarried and we needed a car it was agreed to use the money to buy a family car which was a austin maxi

I can remember my grandad getting a motorbike and sidecar and feeling well flash.

My grandad on dads side died in ww 2 , gran remarried but they didnt have a car as we used to catch a bus then walk a bit to their house .on mums side they were a train ride away which meant walking across fields to nearest town for a bus to the station and then train and then another bus .

Tbh with the utter ridiculum of modern cars (hih outright cost, sky-high tax for anything interesting, short lifespan, growing complexity, stratospheric parts and labour costs of repair)

Most of those I agree with, but not the "short lifespan". Cars nowadays are likely to last at least twice as long as cars did in my teens & 20's (1970s-80s).
I would also say they are generally cheaper in real terms to run (ignoring depreciation costs), as while parts & labour are expensive, they aren't needed nearly as often.

If I had 150k in the bank earning little and devaluing I would put at least 50% of it into Index funds.

Depending on many factors such as state of the market, age or reason for having that money it may not be the best choice.

If current inflation figures are to be believed, there are worse choices than a humble ISA / taxable savings account at 4-5%... while if you're playing the long game gold has gone mental recently (+30% in the past year) although as such may or may not be a good time to buy.

Brilliant idea, a Cyclechat investment advice thread.
I can broker some good deals on bitcoin if anyone's interested.
