Never read such a complete load of bollox, sorry.

What it says on the site makes more sense than the rehashed version quoted above - all they're really saying is that different riders have different requirements from a bike fit, which doesn't sound too controversial.

They've formulated these three broad, whimsically named categories of rider, but they aren't meant to be taken as gospel - which is the point some people seem to have missed.

I was just about to book a bike fit. This thread has just about made me change my mind. The thing is I don't have any discomfort. My cycling is commuting, leisure rides and sportives. I was hoping that a professional bike fit could advise on the optimum position, plus if I were to upgrade my bike in the near future, I didn't want a bike fitter to then say that I should ideally have a different size frame to my new bike. I would rather they said that with reference to my existing starter bike.

If you're interested jn trying to improve your fit yourself try this...

Not the easiest read, but lays down some good principles ('comfort IS ALL') and gives an explanation into some of the errors and contradictions in the bike fit systems.

I only got my fit because the lad who booked it injured himself in an accident and couldn't get a refund, so out of sympathy I bought it off him. As aforementioned, I reverted back after a few months, and since then I've stripped a stone off my blubber and picked up a second joint injury, so it's now largely redundant anyway. Even if they were the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I'm not completely convinced about that, I can't indulge in one every time my weight changes or pick up another med to long term injury. That's expensive and impractical.

Have a read (apologies in advance, it's hard going but it's interesting), and let us know how you do.

I like the physio idea.

The problem with bike fits is that there are several systems out there, that somewhat differ and contradict each other in detail, and they can't all be correct - this being the case, which does one choose?

Like you, I've got Meccano in me and a Reutul fit made things quite uncomfortable. Went back to my own set up, hard won after years of practical application, trial, and error, and the problem went.

I imagine the reason why they aint all correct is because what works for one person maybe a total cock up for another. Positioning is a very personal thing. I would take the advice of someone who specialises in medical problems and work from there with the trial and error thing.

I'm Back!^_^

Interesting getting another's perspective. I thought I was riding square in the clips.. not so, cleat adjustment done.
Saddle height was fine but I reverted back to my original specialized saddle as that was right for sit bones.
Talked about my need to protect my metal infused lower back and fitted a shorter stem.. made a difference immediately.

Proof will be in the riding but I was very happy with the fit. I spoke about the more expensive £150 fit and the guy said no need unless doing riding at a high level. So all in all I thought it was very interesting and will see if it helps.

First ride today. It was like riding a different bike. Alot more comfortable on the saddle and the shorter stem has helped loads. It does feel strange with the cleat adjustment and new shoe inserts but at least I know I am riding square in the pedal.

My initial thoughts are that it was money well spent. I would rather spend the £50 on the bike fit than lose money by not being able to work through an injury caused by a poor set up.
