Hurrah, went to Halfords and got my bike sorted (AGAIN!). The cones had come loose and I had no tools to do it myself.

Anyway, when I got home I decided to change my saddle height (it's slightly too high) but oh wow, I was hitting 15-17mph (2 or 3mph more than usual) without what seemed to be any effort. Increased fitness has probably helped with this but does saddle height really make that much of a difference ??

Also would looses cones make the bike feel sluggish when riding ??

OK, so that's 2 questions!! I'm quite happy now my bike is sorted again ;)

Yes to saddle height, which alters how much power you can exert and endure.

Yes to loose cones, which can make the wheel wobble (loss of traction) and track against the break pads (increase in friction)

Saddle height can be pretty significant. Loose cones would be more likely to lead to graunching noises and odd handling than drag.

Next time you're in a bike shop see about buying a set of cone wrenches. Wheel bearings are pretty easy to sort and a good intro to more involved maintenace.
