I actually chucked a newish tube this weekend, a £8 latex one - it did blow a big hole in itself though.
I'm not sure whether they can be recycled but they probably can.

What you need is a mobile bike mechanic. I only cover Glossopdale and Tameside though

You would probably find that I'm on a par, if not cheaper, than your LBS. I have a call out fee of £15, but if the job costs more than that then it's included, ie if the job comes to £20, then that's all you'd pay, I don't stick the £15 on top of that. I charge 45p per mile for jobs outside my 8 mile coverage area.On my wage I couldnt afford the call out charge never mind the actual fixing of the bike![]()
I am not having a go at you, but there's some really good advice here on DIY. Bicycle Tutor on Youtube is great and breaks down tasks into simple chunks. Cycle specific tools do not cost the earth generally and soon pay for themselves.
My boss at work was a real klutz and did not know one end of a screwdriver from the other until three years ago. We coached and cajoled him into doing little jobs and he now loves working on bikes. This afternoon he came around to my place, changed his cassette, put on a new chain, indexed his gears, and I showed him how to true his wheels. Now he's confident enough to do virtually anything - it is my plan to get him building wheels soon.
There are classes around on bike maintenance that will enable you to save a fortune, as well as experience that glow that comes from riding a nicely set up bike that is all your own work.
Why is it shameful? Maybe I have other things to do with my time!
Just because my priorities are different from yours doesn't make it shameful, maybe it's shameful you don't know how to use a camera as well as me, or can't sail and fettle a yacht the same way I can
Touchy, touchy ............................. So you can use a camera and sail. So can I. Better
.
Point I'm making why give your bike to an LBS or some one else who is frankly going to bugger it up and charge you a fortune for doing so? Bikes are so simple to maintain.
I'm not great at bike fettling, but I can more than get by in 6 foreign languages. Everyone has things they're good at and things they aren't good at. No shame, just different strokes for different folks![]()
