Can't understand how it is possible for a crank to break. You will need a crank extractor, cost about £5 and the appropriate allen key or socket.
Good idea to have a spare bike if you have the space.

Has anyone else had issues trying to buy a brompton folding bike. I have tried to order 2off -standard configuration and so far I have waited 6 weeks trying to get someone to say when I might get the bikes.

I wrote to Brompton direct and they asked me what I had ordered and from whom and then would not give me anymore answers.

They might be good bikes but with that customer service it provides an incentive to find another manufacturer who cares about business.

Does anyone have similar experiences with Brompton or can suggest an alternative supplier/manufacturer.

You should have been told an estimated arrival time from the shop - a while back the wait for a la carte Brommies was 2-3 months. The off the peg models are far easier to get hold of and many shops have them in stock.
