Never experienced it but maybe you put your bikes through more than me.

But wouldn't WD40 make the situation worse, displacing the grease?

I think we're talking bolt *heads* here, I do similar as bike lives outside under a cover

How often depends on the time of the year. Its practically every ride at this time of the year for my leisure bike but in the summer it can be 3-4wks, 10 or more rides.
My commuter is cleaned less often and it tends to be the mechanical parts (drive chain and brakes) and a general wipe down when it is.
