I've been completely paranoid about my bike today and even went as far as leaving it in top gear too when I locked it at the Mall with my D-lock.

I've got a New York 3000. Unfortunately like everything else prices seem to have gone up. The Fahgettabout it mini was designed after mine and has a rating half a point better so must be good. So a bit crazy, my lock is worth about 20% of the value of my bike brand new.

I think people target bikes anyway. I had someone try to target my bike in the garage. As it's an extremely low value bike it was either an outsider or a local of extremely low intelligence.

When my bike got stolen I was going to untie the brakes on the new bike whenever I left it somewhere...then decided I'd probably always forget

You do get paranoid.....but the good thing is the tea leaf will probably go else where.

It's the garage/shed raids that worry me - looks as though in some cases there is some serious force used to get in, and then set to with serious tools to break locks etc. inside the garage...... I'm lucky I am tucked out of the way, and we always spot odd cars as there is no through traffic.

Well the report on the evening news implied the rate of 9 per day in Bristol was twice the national average. It seemed to imply that the police had set up camera's watching some spots to try and catch the thieves. Also they seemed to think that thieves were actually following cyclists home to see where they lived. One man they had on the report (who Mr Summdays recognised as someone he had worked with in the past), had been targeted 9 times by thieves breaking into his garage.

The first time (of 2) I had a bike stolen was from my shed. Whoever did it carefully removed most of the side panelling during the day. (that was 1974). The second time was also in daytime, and they broke the back door off my garage. (That was 1998). It isn't new and it's VERY nasty when it happens - it's the next thing to having your house done over.

On neither occasion were the police very interested. Not even a visit the first time. Did get a visit from a loss adjuster the second time, and his main aim was to reduce the insurance payout as much as possible.

I like the South African approach to thieves and tresspassers - shoot them .

I've had a bike stolen twice. The first occasion was at Uni when thieves turned up with a crane and low loader - they got security to close the road whilst they loaded the complete bike rack including 40 plus bikes onto the back of the lorry - goes to show that you can pinch anything if you have enough cheek.

On the 2nd occasion I had more success. The thief broke the D lock with a car jack. In his haste he failed to notice that some scrote before him must have been messing with the front wheel quick release (an occupational hazard at this rack). 50 yards down the road the front wheel parted company with the rest of the bike... It cost me a new set of front forks, but the thief was last seen stumbling down the road on foot, apparently in considerable agony, after abandoning the two parts of my bike.
