Clearly a less salubrious part of the world. Either that or Yorkshire folk are cheapskates.

I cycled through St Albans the other week, and was shocked to find on the main shopping street, there's a 99p store right next to a Poundland!

Same in Ipswich, they are currently locked in a price war, they went as low as 96p recently!

I will vouch for Ipswich and the blight of pound and 99p stores. There are too many, how many I don't know, but too many. They appear to be the only shops thriving in the town centre currently, which is a sorry state of affairs and probably why the centre is dying. Out of town 'centres' appear to be doing well, but at what cost?
