I recently had the CPS (Couldn't Prosecute Satan) drop a large scale bike theft job I had because they didn't agree that a thief would steal a bike by undoing the front wheel, and then pinch another front wheel to replace it. Yet here we are with a scumbag sentenced for exactly that! Thank God I'm out of this job in 28 days time, because the stupidity of some of those who play in the system is going to make me go all Schwarzenegger if I'm there much longer.

So if I understand that linked article correctly, the teacher had locked his or her front wheel to the rack? For me, the best definition of stupidity is the inability to think in abstract terms and anticipate the likely consequences of your actions.

It does read that way but also entirely possible that the thief was tooled up to easily defeat the frame look but not the wheel one or simply decided that nicking another unsecured front wheel was less effort than busting a second lock.

One does of course wonder what criminal activities an addict would undertake to pay the £1050 in compensation.

If you don't lock it up properly you've got a better chance of it getting nicked.

Well done BTP to begin with.

So what lessons have we learnt from this?

Teachers are not that clever.

If you want the police to take bike theft seriously, buy a high value bike as it looks good on their clear up rate.

I am not being cynical, it was a good result for BTP and the court. How the tea leaf pays the fine is another matter. But I would be locking my bike up properly if I lived round there.
