A "bike train" has been launched in Stirlingshire to encourage commuters to cycle and to make their journeys safer.

The group will ride together on a set route between Dunblane Train Station and Stirling University, three days a week, at commute times.

Sounds a good idea in theory. Wonder how well it will go down with drivers, complaining at cyclists taking up the whole carriageway. Of course not realising this should be easier than overtaking several single riders.

Well, it's good to see, but there are some questions that come to mind.

Is 50% increase in cycle usage going to make much difference? 50% decrease in car usage might be a more worthy target to aim at.

Will there be provision for all these bicycles on the rush-hour trains? (Or do you have to live near the station to take advantage?)

Its a smart idea and will encourage interest from those on the "cusp" of riding but who consider it too dangerous.

I wonder how a large/long train will deal with traffic lights though?

We did one in September in Birmingham. There were six or seven routes around the city that all met up at Victoria square. A couple of local cafes provided breakfast. I guess there were about a hundred people in total and it had a great atmosphere. The route I was on went down the Hagley Road from Quinton, maybe the busiest road into town; we didn't have a single complaint from a driver.
