In the past smoke detectors fitted by the fire service in pensioners houses had encase batteries that couldn't be removed. The ones in my aunts house beeped for weeks. She was oblivious becase she was deaf. A hammer solved the problem (smoke detector not auntie).

Still that beep beep beep can drive you crazy after a few hours.

A long time ago I was staying in a youth hostel in rural New Zealand. I had no real knowledge of the wildlife, so I didn't know if the cheeping creature I heard every time I woke up in the night was a mammal or a bird of some sort. Yeah, when the manager came into our room in the morning and said "the smoke alarm needs a new battery. didn't the beeping drive you crazy?" I discovered that we all assumed it was some sort of distressed animal.

Tis south of the border as well. Presumably cheaper to try and prevent them being called out to deal with a fire.

I got 6 alarms free from the Fire Brigade, they've done 5 years already.

You can buy the long life PP9's designed for smoke alarms.

Our landing alarm has a "hush" function for when the wife's burning tea but you need the broom handle to push the button!.

The alarm in the kitchen allerted me to a water leak in the bathroom which saved our ceiling so very thankful for that!.

You need a thick skin on here sometimes, I had a baptism of fire on the cycle helmet thread but worth sticking around as there are some genuinely nice people who post up .
