When people walk towards me looking at their phones instead of watching where they are going I simply stand still and wait until a they register a response.

Why did you move off of the path?

I suspect your actions may have been reflective of cyclists who ride too close to the gutter, empowering others to squeeze by when its not safe.

Stand your ground and ensure everyone slows to "share" the path.
T'was for the dogs. They're trained and sensible in company but still animals and capable of being spooked by seemingly hostile and unpredictable behaviour of others. Better to have them out of the way of others knobbery.

Try riding a recumbent!

in nature, most "predators" are low fast and sleek*

hence recumbents are seen as a threat

* Beer guts Areobellys are an aerodynamic feature and hence count as sleek

I have two Jack Russells....one has a penchant towards cyclists but not in a healthy way.

Their twice / thrice daily walk is down NCN25 and trust me its fun and games. If these muppets dont play ball it gets quite interesting from both owner and JR.
(99.999% of cyclists are spot on) but this is a shared resource and some of the mtb muppets dont understand the meaning of shared...

apart from that we're quite nice really...

Slightly off topic but I've a JRT and a SBT, and while I'd clearly never leave either dog with children unsupervised, I think the staffie would be much more tolerant and therefore trustworthy around kids then then JRT would be, but it's the staffie people shy away from when we're out walking.

Are you sure, never seen one of those around my neck of the woods, seen bridleways that cyclists are permitted to use, seen footpaths which although cyclists are not specifically allowed to use, under most circumstances it is acceptable if they give way to walkers.
Not sure, hence the "(probably)"!

There really are a lot of cycle tracks that people may walk on. Usually they have a blue circle sign with white bike and people symbols. Still shouldn't force walkers off of them, though.

Yep. I've rarely seen anyone accelerate as fast as the recumbent rider on our tour when a dog took a dislike. I don't think many dogs run at 40mph for long... neither do touring cyclists so it took us a mile or so to catch up!

Here for rides.
Today, on closed roads, several dozen "bloody cyclists" that I saw insisted on crossing the road when it suited them rather than when the marshalls of a world class half-marathon deemed it safe to do so. As a result at least two runners were injured that I saw.

Dozens of pedestrians tried the same and one young lady had a very lucky escape when, having run across the path of tow lanes worth of dozens of runners, she failed to take into account that the third lane was coned off for motor traffic. She ended up on the bonnet but the car had almost come to a complete halt when she hit it.

There's a reason why Ride London hires lots of security staff as well as using marshals. Was this the organiser's first half marathon?

Yes, some people are idiots but that's not exactly a surprise and the runners shouldn't get injured as a consequence.

Loads of marshals and security. And Sparta & DAF have dozens of cph half's and mara's to their credit. Short of rugby tackling the riders I'm not sure what the marshals could do....

It sounds like that would have been proportionate! Did they at least detain them after they injured runners?

Were there barriers or rope or tape or whatever or had the organisers misjudged the risk?
