Bloody engine management lights

I had a Nissan Altima and the light came on so I took it to the garage worried that the engine might blow up. I think it cost $100 or so with the tax but the light went out. I thought that was cheap for a new engine so I asked the mechanic what he did, he had cleaned around the gas cap and added some grease !!!

Take the bulb out................simples

MOT fail sadly . They will check lights up and then goes out .

Was out in wifes car at the weekend - Skoda Roomster with a DSG 'box. The car juddered and the OPC light to came on. It appears this puts it into a limp mode and limits it to 3000 rpm.
This is not a good thing on the M1. In 6th it cruises around 2500rpm. On an incline, such as those you can encounter on the M1 the engine is a bit weedy so it can drop a gear and increase rpm, above 3000rpm...except now it won't . Not a particularly pleasant place to be.
Today, take it out and....no problems at all.

If the manifold pressure transmitter on a Focus fails, you don't get the luxury of limp mode - the engine just stops, even if you happen to be doing 80 in the fast lane of the M6 at the time.

Our Meriva regularly has the hazard light come on and we have to take a fuse out to reset it, aboutto go on hols beginning of june and as we set off the EMS kicked in and thr power steering cut out , i had to restart the engine to get it to play ball.
next year the loan is paid and even though its only got 36000 miles on it on an 8 plate im really thinking of getting shot of it .

I've not done it yet, but I'm guessing that running out of diesel in my Clio is A Bad Thing, simply because the beep associated with the low fuel light (which comes on when the trip computer gets to 65 miles) STRIKES FEAR INTO THE HEARTS OF MEN...

Its will drag some crap into the fuel filter from the bottom of the tank and you will have to re-prime the fuel system when more fuel has been added. Trip computer says 65 miles so you have a good 100+ left as there is normally a gallon when it gets to 0

My mate's four month old Vauxhall kidnapped him t'other day. He got to his destination, turned the engine off and went to remove the key and...it wouldn't let him. Nor would it turn on again. Nor, it turned out, do anything else. He couldn't even open a door to get out. Had to phone the RAC and wait until a man turned up with a laptop and managed to release him from the Vauxhall's evil spell.

Funny that, I had something similar with my 2001 Vectra B, I turned the engine off and couldnt get they key out, restart the engine..anything, whatever I did. I didnt try to get out the car TBF, perhaps I'd have found the same.
Took me ages to get the key out, made me nervous as heck the next few times I went in the car.

I know someone who dismantled the dash on his car (Vauxhall Zafira) and put a bit of bluetack over the engine management warning light. Cured the problem and he was able to sell the car.

There are ways to have a EML come on then go out when checked as part of MOT

Not going to be workable if plans for plug into the OBD as part of MOT happen.

They'll have a job with other posters 2CV's and my Alfa Spider. The only electronic thing in it is the radio and I don't think the USB port will give up any diagnostic info
Probably just ban them from the roads instead.

Well you can't apply rules to things that dont have the things the rules rule on !

My first car had more valves in the radio than the engine !

By re- prime you mean turn the ignition on.

Not usually. If air gets into the system it will have to be primed. Older cars had a hand priming pump but more modern cars (common rail) need the injector pipes cracking open so the air is forced out when turning the engine over. There is no set rule.
