"The Stare" is a mummy thing. Every mother has one, my mother did it to me, and I do it to my kids too!

As for stuff passing too close, I had a similar experience when out with hubby last weekend. A car was coming towards us on the opposite side, a car tried to come past us (we were single file) but she got as far as me and decided to wait till the other car has passed - so we went along side by side while she waited, I could have rested a hand on her roof she was so close.

As a newbie I didn't know what else to do but keep cycling and try to tuck in to the side. I looked across to the window, her passenger was looking straight ahead, but they can't have failed to notice I was there.

the best thing you could have done - and I don't mean to criticise your actions, just to let you know how to stop it happening again - is to read the situation on the road and pull out into primary position (ie the middle of your lane) to prevent anyone trying to push past where there isn't room. It takes a bit of nerve at first, and there are plenty of motorists who don't understand why you're doing it, but most of the time it works. The only thing to do once you're in the situation you describe is get out of it as quickly as possible and (if you get chance) have a quiet word with the driver when they next stop.

Thanks for the advice RT - my copy of "Cyclecraft" arrived yesterday and I will study it carefully.

Arch - sory to hijack your thread! Whenever we come to your end of Yorkshire I always think how nice it would be to cycle around, far fewer hills than my bit of God's own county!

Whereabouts are you from? I'm an exiled Otley lad, myself.

Well, we York and East Yorks CC folk try to have a group ride about once a month, look in 'Informal Rides' every so often. Over the winter we might do shorter rides for the shorter daylight, and increase the distances again in spring. This month is a 50 ish miler, and next month is Admin's birthday ride. There will be cake. (there always is, if I organise a ride!)

If you fancy a ride in this area sometime, I can recommend some nice routes, whatever the distance - flat or gently rolling. And some good cafes. I think it's probably easy enough to bring bikes on the train from the west....
