I got bit on the calf a couple of weeks ago and it's still red to about the size of a 1p.

If they were pointless, they wouldn't exist. In fact they pollinate a wide range of meadow plants and for some - although not in the UK - they are the only pollinators.

Have had 2 horse fly bites this week. Luckily no bad reaction, just a small mark from each. Still not impressed though.

Horse flies work like this: they land on a nice meal (calf in this case) they then set the table - first they set the knife then the fork and then they dig in, if you can splat them between the knife and the fork setting you won't get bitten.

I have had two this year and always react badly to them. Worst one I had couple of years ago, my leg ballooned and I got two weeks on antibiotics...little sods. Got bitten yesterday on the side of my back just below my arm pit...today I have a hot swollen hard lump that itches like feck!!! Nasty buggers!
