A bodkin has a large eye and is used to draw tape or elastic through a hem or waistband. The wooden object is a darning mushroom. You put the mushroom in the sock to stretch out the area that needed darned. The repair was done with a darning needle and wool.

My Mum called these Bodkins.

And I still do. Not that I am your mother @HertzvanRental, she says hastily.
So "odd bodkins", are they a mismatched set, or odd simply because they look are different in some way to what you've used before?

It's an early darning mushroom.

Later ones had a hollow handle which screwed into the head and the hollow bit held needles. Then someone came up with a bakelite darning mushroom with a bulb inside the head and batteries in the handle for use on long dark winter nights.
