Bobby Collins a great footballer of the 60's died this week.People of my age saw this great man lead Don Revie's Leeds United out of the wilderness and onto twelve glory years, before age did it's damage to the once great team.
But my memory of this giant, comes much later just after 1972 infact.I was a 22 year old Postman delivering mail on the High Ash estate in Alwoodley Leeds 17.Well after many years of cheering him from the Kop or Scratching Shed,i used to see him out and about walking for exercise, well he used to greet me and say a few words.I can't tell you how special that was.
What a great man.

He was one of the top footballers in Europe for a while - not bad for someone who stood 5' 3".

Legend is used much too easily in the world of sport but Bobby was a true legend, he played in the twilight of his career here in Greenock for the Mighty 'Ton.
I remember him with affection of the old school hard but fair tackler....
RIP Wee Man

Bobby Collins moved to Leeds from Everton, and is equally revered by the older generations amongst our support. Unfortunately I was born a bit too late to see him but I have only ever heard what a great player he was, and yes, hard as nails too. I remember several years ago he was brought onto the pitch at half time, as ex-players often are at Goodison, so the fans can show they are still appreciated. Brian Labone (RIP) was a sort of M.C. at the club at the time and he introduced Bobby to the crowd; he said that many of us would be too young to have seen Bobby play, but he was a brilliant player and we had better believe it that he was single handedly responsible for keeping Everton in the first division in the late 1950s. My dad and grandad used to tell me what a brilliant player he was as well. It just so happens that after our game on Saturday we were having a pint and one of the old guys in our group began recalling bygone days and told us what a brilliant player Collins was and how disappointed he was when he he was sold to Leeds; quite eerie then when I heard the news of his passing on Monday. I never saw him play but from everything I've heard I so wish I had, RIP legend.
