Bonking at about 35 miles

2 hours riding at a reasonable pace is getting you towards bonking point and you are noticing the tell-tale signs of it coming on.

You haven't actually bonked yet, or you wouldn't be asking questions about it - you'd know!

You need to eat and drink more before you get to that point. As mentioned above - eat something an hour or two before setting off and put something in your drinks to give you a bit of a boost. You don't need full-blown energy drinks - why not just try 2/3 water, 1/3 OJ (or the fruit juice of your choice)?

I would agree with that, I bonked on a steep hill in Essex (yes there is one), there was no way I could get up that hill on the bike - it was only a mile long, but took me 30 minutes to walk up it


I think you are confusing Bonking with not being able to climb a hill.
When you bonk you are finished, you would not even be able to walk for a while.
 
Maybe it was just the 30 miles of head wind last night and the fact I was coming down with a cold on Friday (altho I didn't know that until the Saturday) - he says, hopefully.
Could be. I've done the odd ride where I had nothing and couldn't figure out why. Next day or so, virus or cold.

no in this case it was a bonk - the reason it took 30 minutes to walk a mile was I had to stop every 10 strides or so to sit down!

That's do-able. Will give that a try on the next run. I don't know what they put in the energy drinks but I just can't stomach them.
I don't like the artificial flavours and sweeteners in ready-made sports drinks (or the cost!) so I buy Maltodextrin powder in bulk from MyProtein and make up my own.

Well, that's what I meant! You could do 2 hours at 7 or 8 mph and just burn a bit of body fat, but at 18 mph you'll be using up a fair amount of your glycogen reserves which would need topping up.

There's a reason that marathon runners used to 'hit the wall' at about the 20 mile point because that was when their glycogen ran out. These days they would probably be drinking energy drinks or gels while they run.

Will take a honey covered cereal bar or similar and eat around the 1 hour in mark and see if that makes a difference. I'm already a convert to the "banana 2 hours before" and "drink regularly whilst riding" philosophies.^_^

I don't do energy drinks or bars. They rot your teeth. I eat bananas, dried fruit, nuts and carb load the night before a long ride or run. Drink before and whilst riding as well. No problems.

Did the route tonight no problem. Only difference was 2 shortbread fingers which I ate at 15 and 20 miles in. 105 calories each. No energy loss. Also started slower but the average speed increased. It was either one of these 2 things or I'm getting used to the distance. My vote is for the shortbread!!

Last week I cycled 10 miles on an empty stomach, it nearly killed me.

A few days later, after some porridge for breakfast, a few energy bars on the ride, and some cordial/table salt water mix drink, I cycled 71miles with little effort.

There is a lot to be said for preperation I think.
