Zoo Station - David Downing.
Set in pre-war Berlin. Cracking read.

Robert B Parker, writes the jesse stone books. They are about a police chief from a town called paradise. Good books that have been made into films starring Tom Sellick. Nice reads.

Try reading "The Ladies No 1 Detective Agency" by Alexander Mc call Smith. I know its been on TV but the the writing is just so good and his sly humour will make you cuckle. I have read the entire series and always find it amusing.

Philip Pullman. Just read Dark Materials and a couple of the detective ones and now I'm on the lookout for more of his stuff. Nothing too heavy, just good, interesting story telling with some lively quirks. Page turners.

Would absolutely not recommend any of the Harry Potter books. I know they are children's books but I wouldn't give them to a child to read in case they got put off forever.

Harry Potter has to be one of the very, very few instances where the films are infinitely better than the books. It is no wonder that she got turned down by lots of publishers. The stories themselves are not bad, if generic but her writing is just awful, awful, awful.

Also widely available in your local Hospice Shop at 99p a pop (and none the worse for that). His 44 Scotland Street ones are good, too, especially the ones about Bertie and his appalling mother.

What do you think of the more recent Patricia Cornwell? I thought they'd got rather poor so gave up on her. You could try Tess Gerritson - similar sort of thing to Cornwell. There are lots of Swedish crime writers about too - most of them are ok.

And another vote for Terry Pratchett....
