Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Robert B Parker, writes the jesse stone books. They are about a police chief from a town called paradise. Good books that have been made into films starring Tom Sellick. Nice reads.

Try reading "The Ladies No 1 Detective Agency" by Alexander Mc call Smith. I know its been on TV but the the writing is just so good and his sly humour will make you cuckle. I have read the entire series and always find it amusing.

I've read them. They're good

Philip Pullman. Just read Dark Materials and a couple of the detective ones and now I'm on the lookout for more of his stuff. Nothing too heavy, just good, interesting story telling with some lively quirks. Page turners.

Would absolutely not recommend any of the Harry Potter books. I know they are children's books but I wouldn't give them to a child to read in case they got put off forever.

Harry Potter has to be one of the very, very few instances where the films are infinitely better than the books. It is no wonder that she got turned down by lots of publishers. The stories themselves are not bad, if generic but her writing is just awful, awful, awful.

The Assassin series by Robin Hobb - (Assassins Apprentice is the first one).
Jonathon Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke.

Both cracking reads.

What do you think of the more recent Patricia Cornwell? I thought they'd got rather poor so gave up on her. You could try Tess Gerritson - similar sort of thing to Cornwell. There are lots of Swedish crime writers about too - most of them are ok.

And another vote for Terry Pratchett....

If you read nothing else this year, make good and sure you read this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chimp-Paradox-Acclaimed-Management-Confidence-ebook/dp/B006K26BEQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393528978&sr=8-1&keywords=chimp paradox I'm addicted to it and when the complexities of what's going on beneath our skulls are pointed out, it's like being in the crowd and wondering why the cricket ball is getting bigger and bigger...and then it hits you. You'll be slapping your forehead going, 'of course, why didn't I think of that?' It's made such a huge difference to me, I'm promoting it evangelically!
