the scheme has been worked on continuously since (to my certain knowledge) 2006. It was originally intended to cover the 32 boroughs, but Brent and Ealing wouldn't have it.

Why is the option to catch public transport and then cycle around the capital a good reason NOT to allow this?

Is driving around London better?

Depends what time you want to visit - driving is much quicker late at night!

No - just don't want numpties hogging the bikes and riding around not knowing where they are going. Like the Mancs that get out at ever tube stop to have another look at the map!

True dat. There should be a conveyor belt at the exit barriers to shift people who haven't worked out which foot to start moving first into a holding pen until they figure it out or starve.

IF, and when Boris Barrels Bikes become available to day visitors, could a London resident AUK member organise a 100 km Permanent.

Maybe a special medal struck for successful completion.

As a matter of fact. London area AUK members with a Boris Bike key can do a ' DIY by GPS '.

Now I'm jealous.....

You can always ride the London Sightseer, an AUK 100k

http://www.hounslowa.../sightseer.html

Only problem is it starts near Bill Carnaby, the organiser's home in Hampton Hill, a Boris Bike free area at the moment.

I've been waiting since the scheme started for casual use to come in. When it does I'll use the Boris Bikes whenever I'm in London - about 6 times a year. It'll replace tube journeys and walking.

If TfL don't get on with setting it up I suppose I'll have to give in and pay my £3.

100k chaning the bike every 30 minues to avoid charging ...

sounds like a lot of planning

5 minute wait between docking old and undocking new too, that will wreck you avg speed.

I quite fancy having a crack at a Sightseer variant, as a new style GPS validated Audax, at night. But I'll use my own bike ta.

Worth it for the time saving I reckon. Casual use will involve a lot of faffing I reckon.

Without trawling through all the previous posts (somebody has already similar) but opening the scheme up to casual users IMO is only a good thing; Joe Bloggs is driving to work for several days in a row, stuck in jams etc with bikes going flying passed him; one morning he wakes up (a beautiful summers day) and decides on the spur of the moment to try out this cycling lark, likes it and becomes a regular cyclist. Encouraging modal shift isn't as simple as that but a registration scheme puts another barrier on it (ie its makes it harder for spur of the moment decisions).

A bit OT but on my youtube links, yesterday was a link to the similar Melbourne Bike Scheme, the poster was suggesting its a failure because of restrictions it places on spur of the moment decisions (in Victoria's case their helmet laws).
