Good riddance (to the bridge, that is). It was always a loopy idea. £40 million for a bridge for cyclists, with a ferry service lying idle underneath it that could be revived for £250k, and a tunnel that could be turned into a bus and bike lane for £50k was an fool's mission. I took Grimshaw apart on this three years ago, and went to an HoC committee at which he spectacularly failed to make any sense on the subject.
They started off having a flat bridge, and then, when somebody pointed out that the river had boats on it....they went to a lifting bridge which would require 24 hour protection. Then the spiral bridge...
Just imagine cycling over this at two in the morning, and realising, halfway across that you really don't like the look of those two young men walking towards you....
