I managed to kill my M R after about 2 years of constant use by washing the tin in the sink. What I didn't realise was that the bearing in the base of the tin was rusting up and eventually siezed completely. Replaced with a Panasonic which is still going after 5 years. It does say "never immerse in water" in the instructions so I just give it a quick wipe-down after every use (no mention of that in the M R instructions).
I've tried baking by hand, but it doesn't work for me.
I did exactly the same - washed the M R tin and broke it. I like my replacement Panasonic much more and I've probably had it at least 5 years too. I use it to make dough for bread buns. I can't slice bread sensibly so if I make a loaf I end up with huge doorstep sandwiches. I'm too lazy to knead dough, but I sometimes make things like soda bread that doesn't need kneading

), has been used for 15 years or so and still going. I very rarely buy bread, and just put spare loaves in the freezer for emergency situations when I realise we have run out. I can't remember the last time I actually used the bake part of it. I have started making some cheats sour dough by hand but I'm not brilliant at kneading.
